Self Care Isn’t Selfish

Self Care is finally choosing to take better care of yourself, so you can take better care of the rest of your world. You get to give the best version of yourself!

Self care is something that I truly believe is ESSENTIAL to the human experience. Regardless of race, age, gender, or how busy (or lazy) you may be in your life – I would guarantee that you need more of it.

By self care, I don’t mean (just) fizzy bath bombs and facials (even though these are definitely part of my favorite self care things to indulge in). Let’s talk about what self care really is.

Self care to it’s core, is taking care of YOU. It’s stopping all those bad habits of saying “yes” to go to events, or to do favors for friends, when you really don’t have the energy within you to do it. It’s honestly saying you’d rather relax with a good book and have an early sleep, than go to a club – instead of making up an excuse that you’re sick. It’s asking your spouse or S.O. if they can handle dinner tonight or do the laundry because you just simply need a break.

Self care is choosing YOU. It’s not selfish.

The problem is, we’ve been engrained to put ourselves last. But it should not and does not have to be that way.

I use the analogy of a tree, almost religiously. Imagine as though you are the roots of your tree (symbolising your life) and the beautiful branches and colorful leaves are all the relationships, both business and personal that you have, all of your projects and anything else that may consume your time.

If you, the roots of your life, are not well maintained, watered and nourished, then the rest of your tree will die.

Not to sound so dramatic, but seriously. If you are putting yourself last consistently, then you are not giving the best version of yourself to anything that matters to you. If you make yourself, your mental sanity and physical health and well being the top priority list, then not only are you going to live a much happier life, but you are going to blossom in all other areas. Your light and new found glow and skip to your step will rub off in your work, in your relationships, in your friendships.

Self care is not selfish.

So go do something for you.

Seriously, stop reading this.

You’re still here.

Okay, I know I’m being cheesy, but really, go love yourself.

K, thanks, bye.

Until next time, Babes,

Sarah Anderegg
